Dress - Vintage 1980s - Vintage Junkyard

Earrings - Thrifted

Belt - Modern from two years ago - Portmans

Bag - Vintage 1980s Etienne Agner - I Love Vintage

I probably should apologise for the number of pictures, but I won’t. As the boyfriend said, it’s not often we get this many pictures we’re happy with so why not bombarde the blog?

Anyway, this is my Mrs Ling Chung outfit. Being struck with illness, I’ve been watching a lot of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and am deeply in love with the characters. How can I not love a lady detectives series based in the 1920s?! One thing that constantly fascinates me is the numerous lovers Phryne Fisher has, including the handsome Ling Chung.

In the scene where Ling Chung introduced Camilia, the girl his family wants to marry, she was wearing a qipao. Qipaos are one of those things that I think are extremely oriental - massively attractive when worn by Westerners, appropriate at traditional weddings, but probably generally too much or too cliche for me to wear! However, when I saw this dress at The Vintage Junkyard I thought this is the perfect qipao-style that I can wear every day without feeling too Oriental.

Confession: the first time I heard the name Camilia I misheard and thought it was Chameleon (wouldn’t that be much cooler?!). I was obviously wrong, but I thought it should serve as my character’s name: Chameleon Ling. Oh yeah, be scared. Chameleon wears qipaos with belt and bare her legs. Anyway, what about you? Do you wear a lot of your traditional dresses? Do you have a vintage one? Tell me about them.

Love,

NoraFinds

So my vintage meetup was a disaster. A friend of mine came along, and basically she was the only one (+ me and boyfriend) there. The lovely bloggers Tim and Jesse showed up a few hours laters (I didn’t know they were still showing up), and I missed them by about an hour. Gutted. Many couldn’t make it for various reasons, and it stormed in the morning, so I guess more people couldn’t be bothered. I think I will leave it to others to organise meetups. So if you’re keen on attending one, check out Old Hat group.

Wanting to make sure that I didn’t leave anyone out, I hung around for a bit - chatting to some Sydney Antique Centre sellers and trying on beautiful pieces. I actually purchased a gorgeous 1930s velvet/rhinestones hat to match my 1930s velvet/rhinestones dress, a piece I’ve been saving for the cold weather. But that’s for another post - let’s talk about my outfit.

This shift dress is the piece I picked up at Victor and The Mature sale, a beautiful Australian “Embassy” dress. I found out from blogger/seller Bess Georgette that these dresses used to be sold in Coles (a supermarket line here in Australia) and this is the fun article she recently wrote about these dresses. Can you imagine if you can still buy these dresses in Coles? Hmmm… I spend too much time grocery-shopping already I might never leave!!

My accessories are all first-timers on the blog, but I know they’ll make more appearances in the future. Especially my gorgeous gorgeous bling-bling of GloMesh clutch. It’s just perfect with my new vintage Bally heels with the brown and gold colors. Don’t you just love it when pieces just accidentally match each other? Or are you one of those wise ones that only buy things that match existing pieces in your wardrobe and build your collection that way? I have to admit I should probably think about how I will wear a piece before buying it, but I often go “ugh, I love it. Life is too short.”

Love,

Last week after work, I met up with photographer Alexandra Adoncello and model Kate Leonarder to do a quick shoot with a beautiful Coco Repose dress. If you’re following me on Facebook, you would’ve seen a sneak-peek; but I’ll post some pictures when Alex finish editing them. We had so much fun shooting both in Hyde Park and QVB, and I think you’ll like the photos. Well, I hope you do.

Anyway, in between shoot I asked Alex if she can take some pictures of me in this dress. This is the dress I completed two weeks ago, using Simplicity 5822 pattern. It was a fun dress to make, and I’m gonna start another dress in the same pattern hopefully this weekend! Instead of using buttons I actually sewed in some hook-and-eyes, but I think it will probably look better with buttons. So next time!

Obviously I felt the pressure being in front of the camera while Kate the model is watching me. I’m not a model, but I do like have nice pictures taken. But who doesn’t hey? All bloggers are somewhat narcissistic anyway, or else we wouldn’t have started blogging. I’d like to remind you that I wasn’t always like this. I had difficult time in school and had my physique used as part of my bullying. It wasn’t until I met the boyfriend (almost four years ago now) that I felt comfortable in my own skin. Having someone who unconditionally loves you just makes the difference.

Last night boyfriend actually said that he sometimes misses me wearing t-shirt and jeans. As much as he likes that I dress up, he misses the simple casual girl. And he also sometimes misses my long hair. Isn’t it nice to know that someone loves you however you look? :)

Have a great weekend everyone! I will be catching up with two other bloggers tomorrow and celebrating Chinese New Year this weekend. I will keep you updated through every bloody social media, as always!

Weekend, oh the glorious weekend. Is it me or this week’s been a really long one? Yawn! I’m making a dress at the moment and I really need the weekend to work on it!

I completed this skirt around two weeks ago, and I’ve worn it several times since. It’s so versatile because of the fun print and the length, and I lined it with satin so it holds its shape nicely and doesn’t crease easily. Some people prefer plain fabric when sewing their own clothes, but I look at sewing as a fun past time activity. I want to be able to create something I can’t get in shops (using vintage patterns) and in fun fabrics (I really do love prints!).

This outfit is another example of print mixing, accessories stacking, and silver/gold clashing. I do agree that gold and silver accessories don’t always work, but sometimes you gotta give it a try. I envy girls who can put together outfits in their minds. I’m not one of them. I actually need to physically put together pieces on myself before I can decide whether or not the outfit works. That does actually mean changing in and out of clothes and putting on and taking off accessories a billion times before I walk out the door, and yes, my boyfriend is indeed very patient.

I think this outfit works, but what do you think? And are you like me? Do you need to physically put together pieces or can you create an outfit in your head?

Love,

NoraFinds
